In 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. went to Memphis to support more than 1,000 sanitation workers, who were striking for union recognition and better working conditions. In his “Mountaintop” speech - delivered the night before his assassination - Dr. King spoke of an expanded vision of racial, economic, and social justice.
As many of us enjoy the long weekend, we are called to remember Dr. King’s extraordinary role in the movement that dismantled Jim Crow segregation and secured civil rights for African Americans. But we also remember MLK’s broader vision for justice and equality - and the tremendous work that remains to make that vision a reality. King’s commitment to advance economic justice and challenge militarism are particularly salient today.
Dr. King’s dream, and his challenge to build a truly democratic society rooted in social justice, inspires our work here at PRA. In 2014, we reaffirm our commitment to using strategic research and analysis to advance an intersectional vision of social justice - pushing back against attacks on labor and worker organizing, defending public education, and calling out voting restrictions, incarceration, deportation, and other schemes that disproportionately affect people of color and the poor.
As we challenge the Right - defenders of undue power and privilege - and work for social justice, we ask for your support. Your donation will help ensure that activists, educators, scholars, journalists, and the public can continue to draw upon our thoughtful, reliable, analytical research as they counter attacks on democracy, justice, and freedom.
