One Million Moms, an organizational arm of the American Family Association, has been involved in an epic battle against gay superheroes since May. In light of DC Comics’ recent announcement that the widely-beloved superhero Green Lantern is gay, which followed Marvel Comics’ announcement that openly gay superhero Northstar would wed his boyfriend in a coming comic book issue, One Million Moms is setting itself up as an archenemy to gay superheroes everywhere. An alert on its website mobilizes its followers to “TAKE ACTION.” One Million Moms asserts that DC and Marvel “want to indoctrinate impressionable young minds …by using children’s superheroes to desensitize and brainwash them in thinking that a gay lifestyle choice is normal and desirable.”
Meanwhile, in a June 7 email, the Family Research Council (FRC) condemned the same-sex marriage service held at Fort Polk in Louisiana this May as an “invasion of federal marriage law” that could trigger an “avalanche” of ceremonies in the military. FRC notes that this anticipated avalanche is in line with “slippery slope” warnings from prominent Republicans during the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repeal.
FRC insists that allowing same-sex marriage ceremonies in the military exploits American “men and women in harm’s way” in favor of advancing the Obama administration’s “social agenda.” According to FRC, the struggle over the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is really a battle for the welfare of America’s troops. The e-mail concludes with a plea for readers to contact their senators and ask them to ensure that neither the Obama administration nor the Army overrides DOMA, which is “still the law of the land” – for now.
