Political Research Associates is calling on Pastor Rick Warren to oppose an antigay bill promoted by his allies that is currently being debated in the Ugandan legislature. In March 2008, Warren told Ugandans that homosexuality is not a natural way of life and thus not a human right. Now the country is debating a bill that would lead to life imprisonment for gay sex, and death for those having same sex relations if they are HIV positive or having sex with someone under 18, plus criminalize any human rights organizing for LGBT rights.

In an October 31 statement, Rick Warren distanced himself from one Ugandan antigay leader, Pastor Martin Ssempa, but that is not good enough. We need him to denounce the bill itself, and challenge his friend Archbishop Henry Orombi’s support of it.
“Rick Warren has not distanced himself from Orombi or, for that matter, from the Ugandan first lady, Janet Museveni,” says PRA researcher Reverend Kapya Kaoma, whose year-long investigation of U.S. right-wing evangelicals’ homophobic campaigns in Africa will soon be released. “Both are strong supporters of this inhumane criminalization of LGBT people.”
“We need Warren to say loud and clear that LGBT persons have the same right to enjoy their lives as heterosexuals,” says Reverend Kaoma. “We expect nothing more or less.”
